In his spare time,  when not painting, David restores traditional wooden boats.

In this series of abstracted paintings, he has taken ideas from the boats he works on and reduced shapes to a minimum of line and colour in order to extract the essence of the subject.

By distilling the lines of an object, the image is reduced to a minimum of detail. The painting may start out as an accurate sketch of part of a boat but becomes increasingly abstracted.

The distillation of line and restricted use of colour creates an abstract which is stripped of superfluous matter and open to differing interpretations and responses.
